What is the thing hanging on the dutch oven handle

I see that many dutch ovens have this little wire thing hanging from the handle. I can’t for the life of me figure out what it is used for.

See the little thing hanging on the handle. Looks like a spiral metal coil. I have no idea what it is. Not all the Dutch ovens have it.

It allows the use of the assist tab handle when hot without having to touch it directly. Like a coil handle on a waffle iron that stays reasonably cool, it can be grabbed with a bare hand to tip the pot to pour out the contents.

I've seen them on the lodge scalloped bottom dutch ovens and kettles... and a couple of the canadian brands.
