Just wanted to say hello and how excited I am that there is an online free forum for folks like myself who get a kick out of old cast iron cookware. There something to be said for taking a crusty old skillet and transforming it into something nice enough to hang on your wall or even better.... use and pass down to the next generation to use!
 
I know what you mean. My mums always had hers hanging on the wall. This summer we plan on doing a short term swap of pans so I can get the crud burned off hers for her as well as continue the process with mine on an outside basis as the smell of the crud coming off affects my husband's breathing,.... If I only had a wood stove ,with a firebox big enough, I'd use hot coals and the smell would go up chimney.
