I can't believe I have one of these stories now. My mother never even cooked with cast iron.
Shortly after I started collecting, she said she would bring me a Griswold skillet from her basement that she bought in PA years ago and never used. It took weeks for her to find it, so of course I'm wondering the whole time what the heck it could be. She finally found it: No. 7 SBL hinge tab, pretty cool! https://imgur.com/a/x3ttBI3
So when she found it, my mom mentioned that she has another one that a friend gave to her recently. Her friend Barbara used it exclusively for cornbread literally every day for years, has another just like it. But, mom says, it's small and badly damaged. I ask her to send a picture to me anyway. She tells me "ok... I can make out Erie PA on the bottom, does that mean anything to you?". Yes mom. Please send pictures.

I'm thinking, Ok, maybe it's pitted, maybe it's just crud, fun little project either way. Slant logos are old enough to have been used exclusively on wood stoves for decades, but it might not be so bad. Wait... weird size, or maybe weird camera angle. Mom, can you send a pic of the top of the handle?

Holy crap.
With embarrassingly little time and effort, what my mom thought was a piece of junk turned into this: https://imgur.com/a/kw0OWVh
Mom was impressed. She told Barbara I restored it and texted her the photo. Barbara's only response? "Have you made cornbread yet?" :chuckle:
