I have been interested in CI cooking for a VERY long time. I had 1 Lodge Logic skillet, like the sizzling skillets you'd get at any restaurant so nothing too major. I had a decent seasoning on it and then one day a very well meaning relative scrubbed it nice and clean for me and put it in the dishwasher.... Kinda fell out of CI cooking after that, always wanted to get back into it but never really did.

Scored (what I think is) a pretty decent price on some used CI from a Facebook yard sale group and that brought me back to cooking with them. I know I don't know all that much about cast iron so I figured this would be a great place to spend some time and learn to make sure that I can pass these pans down. One thing that I find very important is family tradition. I see a lot of families that have heirlooms that get passed from generation to generation and, unfortunately, there's not much of that in my family. There's a ring that gets passed from father to son but other than that nothing. I would really like to have a few things that I could pass on to my kids in addition to that and I think CI is a great one.

In addition to that I'm also a huge fan of older vintage things. I think today's society is too much into quick, easy, and disposable things, from lighters to pens it just seems so impersonal without any "character", cast iron cooking to me is similar to why I have an affinity to Zippo lighters. Not sure if that makes any sense, but it makes sense in my head.

Anyway, super glad to be here

Hey, nice to hear from someone on the east coast. Your feelings on the permanency (SP?) of cast iron will resonate with nearly all us enthusiasts. A woman who bought a skillet from me hugged it to her and said "this will last a lifetime". I pointed out that it already had lasted two at least and she should be thinking more like "forever".

Always good to hear from a fellow preservationist. Look forward to seeing your finds and restorations on this site.

Hey Martin! I too am from NJ (Brick) and I too have an affinity for things when times were simpler (I also love the new technology). In that vein I have quite a collection of old rotary phones, mostly Western Electric. They all work when I have a land line (at the moment I don't). What I remember most about these phones was I couldn't WAIT for us to get a push button, and here I am collecting the older rotaries. In those days you remembered EVERYONE'S phone number (while Mom was frying chicken in the old CI skillet).

Well, by now I hope that very "well meaning relative" knows how to clean your CI, or let you clean it.
Starting your own family heirloom collection will get your kids into learning about some history and maybe like antiques.

Your affinity with Zippo lighters resonates with me being a dealer of antiques, because people like you make cents for my pocket. I have sold some early Zippo lighters in the past.

Saving history one piece at a time.:icon_thumbsup:
