Newbie question regarding skillet

Very new to cast iron and came across a gated piece at a local antique store. I thought this might be an SMS with the given handle design however the heat ring has notches. Notches are evenly spaced from each other just left of 6 ol clock and another notch is nearly at 12 ol clock. Anyone come across something like this? I couldn’t see the notches when I bought it. I discovered them after stripping the skillet down. I think it’s neat but am perplexed now.

It has all the hallmarks of an SMS, except for the bottom gating, which tends to indicate some other, unknown foundry used an SMS pan for its pattern. Hard to say if the notches are intentional; they may just be small voids/air bubbles in the casting or damage to the pattern transferred to the casting. The photo isn't large enough to tell.

Does this help? The three on bottom gating look intentional. The one near the twelve ol’clock area isn’t as prominent.

Bottom gating refers to the "scar" across the bottom where the molten iron entered the mold there, as opposed to side gating where the iron enters at points along the top rim of the skillet. I don't think any of the breaks in the heat ring are intentional.

Oops, totally a newbie! Forgive the ignorance, I used gate term inappropriately there. Was trying to describe the heat ring. Thank you so much! So I have a good light (as in weight) user pan that is from 1800’s? I think this was an awesome find for 18$. I wasn’t sure due to breaks in heat ring and the raised 8 looked a little messy. Either way, I was happy with my find to be able to have a light weight CI pan that had no wobble! Gave it a new lease on life as it was completely covered in black flaking old grease and grime inside and out.
