Indentations in Griswold Slant

I noticed these indentations in this #9 Slant Erie. They appear to form a rough square, with the dents approximately 3 1/2" from one another. The dents are about the same size. Could be one in the middle of the logo between the "S" and the "W" in the logo, as well.

Any thoughts on what they are?

Those have been observed before. Similar marks are seen on some late Favorite skillets as well. It is doubtful they were in the pattern to begin with. Some have theorized that some type of mechanism to break pans out of the sand molds made them while the freshly cast iron was possibly still in some slightly malleable state.

I don't think-- whatever they are-- that they represent damage or defect.
