How to remove thermometer from Wagner lid?

I am cleaning an unmarked Wagner hammered Dutch oven for a friend, the pot is coming along nicely. But the lid has the thermometer in it and I can't get it out so I can clean the lid. I have tried turning it to see if it unscrews but no luck. It looks like it is crimped or pressed together. The body of the thermometer is aluminum, so lye would dissolve it and I'm sure electrolysis wouldn't do it any good either.
Has anyone successfully removed the thermometer without destroying it?

Im pretty sure there is a thread about this same problem. I think it would be hard to get out without ruining it. I would try to soak it with PB Blaster, or WD40.

This may help.

I guess I wasn't using the right search words. Thanks for that. I'll soak it in PB Blaster for a while then try turning it again. Will report back with results.
