Thought I'd share with you guys an interesting piece I bought over the weekend. Looks like an air bubble in the casting and also it's missing the period after the S in USA. Must've been made on a Friday!
Since all the incised markings on a piece of CI are raised protrusions on the inside of the sand mold, the possibility exists they can fall or be knocked off in the process of removing the pattern from the mold. It's a wonder more pieces aren't missing their markings if you think about it. You don't notice air bubbles as much unless they are bigger than about 1/32".
Griswold Slant logo skillets are occasionally seen with a wavy area 9 to 3 o'clock that for some reason doesn't mess up the markings. Not sure what causes this.
