Painted Care Bear Skillet

I found a project skillet at a thrift store today. I suspect there may be a no notch Lodge #6 skillet underneath of the care bear stickers and the grey paint. The skillet has a raised number 6 on the handle, an unbroken inset heat ring, large pour spouts, and an upside down letter Y molder's mark. I will post additional pictures after I remove the paint and the stickers with a wire wheel brush (just kidding).:eek:

what in the world would make anyone think that was a good idea to paint that poor thing up like that? thank you for helping to restore dignity to that poor old pan.
 
I used Strypeeze and #0000 steel wool to remove most of the paint. I will set up a lye bath to remove the remaining paint and crud when the weather gets a bit warmer. After I removed the paint, I noticed a reinforced lip and what may be either rough casting or a sprue mark (about 1" in diameter) on the back bottom center of the skillet. The skillet's dimensions follow: Inside diameter - 8 3/4", Spout to Spout - 10", Total Length - End of Handle to Opposite Edge - 13 1/2" - Diameter of Heat Ring - 6 1/2". The molder's mark on this skillet appears to be much larger than other molder's marks I have seen on Lodge skillets. I welcome your thoughts regarding the skillet's manufacturer and/or whether you believe it is a recast.:icon_thumbsup:

I still wouldn't rule out a no-notch lodge... the handle, heat ring and big spouts and that raised size all point to lodge for me... but I agree the molder's mark is unusual for lodge.
 
I went to an antique shop a few years ago and saw a griddle painted black and with some mushrooms and flowers. I asked the lady working at the time if they could do better, she told me that the painting made it worth more, so I told her that I intended to strip it off so it can be used on the kitchen stove and not the wall. She wined a bit but we came to a price. Then she tells me that she painted it, but it never sold. I kept my mouth shut. The paint kept the rust away.

I have purchased early hearth pots and kettles painted for decoration beside the fireplace, kept the rust away.

I bought a favorite #3 at an auction for $0.50 that was painted and had ladybug stickers on it. I stripped it and discovered that it was cracked. I still use it to fry 2 eggs in the morning. That crack doesn't hurt anything function wise. I figured that was the reason they painted it. I dont buy painted skillets any more unless they are cheap.
