Ive always loved cast iron cookware from skillets to syrup kettles. I have recently acquired a skillet from a yard sale and cleaned it up pretty nicely.
It has markings of raised 8 on handle and letter Y at six o'clock on back of handle along with a solid ring on bottom. I know there are some very professional skillet people on here that are dying to tell me make and year. Thanks in advance and thank you for allowing me to join your site!!

Photos are always recommended for the best identification. Is the Y mark at 6 o'clock on the handle or on the bottom of the skillet? If the latter, sounds like you may have an early Lodge if the HR is inset, or perhaps what collectors hope might be an elusive Blacklock if an outside HR.

thanks Doug. Ive viewed that site and other sites as well and i am no more educated about this skillet than when I started. But Im from Alabama so that stands to reason(lol).
If we cant identify it this way I will send a pic.

Is the HR at the very outer edge of the skillet bottom, like the sidewalls extend down below the bottom to form it, or is it a raised ring about 1" smaller diameter than the bottom of the pan?
 
Doug I would say the the soild ring around the bottom sits inside the bottom of the pan probably 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch and the raised "y" sits 1 inch inside the ring.

There may or may not be a notch in the heat ring at 12 o'clock.
 
yes you are right on. No notch like you say. underside handle is a little different but that probably wont make a difference in manufacturer.
For what its worth the underside handle has a raised rib that goes to the pan, im guessing for a little more support from handle to pan. You are so kind with your help.
