How to subscribe to a thread?

Subscribing to threads is not enabled. There have been issues in the past where, rather than unsubscribe when they no longer wanted to be, some users would merely mark email notifications as spam in a misguided effort to make them stop. The result was our server being blacklisted by several ISPs, and all emails from the roughly two dozen domains on it being blocked.
