Hello fellow CastIronians!
I am relatively new to the Cast Iron scene, I have only been using CI for about 2 years. I used to think all cast iron was heavy and that turned me off. Then I discovered OLD CI and I have been hooked ever since! I love going to flea markets or scanning Craigslist for bargains on older pieces, it's a lot like a treasure hunt. I have re-seasoned my pieces using the oven cleaner method and then crisco layers. These pieces are my absolute favorite cooking pans, they cook so well and the seasoning makes the food slide like it's on glass.
I joined the forums because I found a wealth of info here and the members are very helpful. Great community!
So far, I have only collected a few pans, and they are all users - even though I do display them on my kitchen wall because I love to look at them too! So far I have three Griswold skillets; a #3, #6 and a #8 (the #8 had some warpage, but I wanted a pan for camping and the price was just too good, so it's still a user). I also have a small (same size as my #3 Griswold) hammered skillet with no name, and a no name pancake griddle. I have been trying to figure out the maker of the pancake griddle but my Google-fu has failed me. My best guess is that is is an economy piece produced somewhere between 1905 - 1920. I will start another thread in the appropriate sub-forum with pictures at a later date, and maybe someone will be able to help me ID it.
I just love cooking in pans that are easily two to three times as old as I am (I am 41), that could have been used by my grandmother or great-grandmother's generation. I didn't get any hand-me-down pans from my own ancestors, but I make it a point to cherish these pans anyway, as they are somebody's heirlooms. It makes me feel more in touch with my roots to think of all the meals these pans have seen over the decades.
Anyway, I'm glad to have found this forum and all of the wonderful info it contains! Thanks!
