Hello from Arlington, TX

Hello All, I started in the cast iron world about 4 months ago when I bought a shallow Lodge muffin pan at an antique shop to cook chicken thighs on my smoker. I started watching YouTube videos to learn how to clean the pan and I started learning about Griswold, Wagner, etc. and I was hooked. I have since acquired about 25 pieces of Griswold, Wagner, Favorite and Wapak. My wife thinks I'm crazy and wants to know where I'm going to put them all.

My next quest is for a Wapak Indian Head skillet, but I'm confused by two different medallions I have seen. One looks like it is recessed in the middle of the skillet bottom and the other has a ring around the Indian Head and the logo looks raised above the level of the skillet bottom at the same height as the heat ring. Are they both authentic or is one a reproduction? My Griswold and Wagner book pictures the one that is recessed. I would appreciate any help. I look forward to learning more.

AFAIK, Wapak Indian head fakes are discernible by either having the wrong handle or by obviously bad casting detail. The two styles of medallion you reference are seen on skillets that appear genuine. There are also two styles of the real Indian head handles, one having a long rib, a hollowed underside, and a shorter hanging hole that the other does not. The tops of handles also differ, with one having an incised numeral, and the other a recessed, raised numeral.

I seem to recall that the No8 Native American head skillet is the one with two handles but do any of the other sizes also include the two handle styles?
