Hello from a deep rabbit hole in S.W. Missouri

A little over a month ago, my wife and I were at a local flea market looking for vintage double edge razors, which I have been collecting for about 2 years now. I saw an old cast iron skillet for $5, I had no idea what it was but I've been wanting one for a while. It looked ok, so I went ahead and bought it.

When I got home, I sat down at the computer and started reading. I learned a lot and found out that it was a 3 notch Lodge #5. The next day I went to Goodwill and found a #9 Griswold with a small logo for $10, so I bought it. I was very excited about it until I looked it up and found out the ones that say Made in USA weren't very desirable, but it was flat and in very good shape, so I was still happy.

I travel some for my work, mostly less than 100 miles and the next week I stopped in at a small flea market about 40 miles away that was on my way. I had been there before, so when I walked in the guy said "no razors today", I chuckled and said, how about cast iron pans, he said "nope". I turned around and started for the door, and then he said "there was a guy in a few days ago the said he has some that he need to sell because he's moving to the Philippines, so I got his number and went on my way. The next couple of days I tried to figure out how to bring this up to my wife, she already thinks I'm a nut because of my razor collection, I have over 200.

We already hade a trip planed to go to Tulsa for the weekend to see my parents and our new grandson. About 15 minutes after leaving the house I told my wife, I wanted to make a quick stop and look at some pans, she just looked at me. When we got there, I went in and she staid in the car with the dogs. I walked in and he took me to his kitchen where he had them laid out, on the table, counter, and floor. He said he had over 40 pieces and was moving and didn't want to pay the shipping. I looked around and saw Griswold slants, LBLs, SBLs, a Griswold #9 Dutch oven, some Wagner Ware, Lodge single notch and 3 notch chicken fryers, and a lot more. I thought to my self, why am I here, I can't afford this. He told me what he and then he told me what he would take for them all. I told him ok and started carrying them to the car, after 8 boxes and a couple of hand fulls, I got in the car and my wife just looked at me. After calculating it up, I ended up getting them for a little over $5 a piece.

Sorry for rambling on, but my wife is getting tired of listening to me. I believe this is going to be the deepest and darkest rabbit hole that I've ever fallen into.

Love that story Mike. It does get to be an obsession. Do you have plans to clean the pans, or are you good with them in the condition you bought them?

I bet you'll find that rabbit hole is full of good stuff! You did indeed get a great deal--have fun fixing it all up. (Part of which is finding where to store or display your ready made collection!)

Sharon, I'm working on storage/display in a pantry off the kitchen. If it turns out ok, I'll take some pictures.

Jody, I'm in the process of cleaning some of them right now, some I'm happy with the way they are, and others I'm not sure yet.

SpurgeonH, here's a couple pictures that I took after I got home. The little pieces of masking tape is how I tagged them while I was doing my homework.
