I bought a piece at an auction last week and would like some help in identifying age, value, history, ect. from some of you folks that know about cast iron. I am a novice and just buy pieces that catch my eye. I will post some pics as soon as i figure out how.

A "recast". A piece made by using an actual pan as a pattern. The round flat blob in the center is where the molten iron entered the mold. The original pan would have had the iron enter the mold from points around the top lip of the pan. Could have been made any time after the pan used to cast the copy was made.

I appreciate your reply and the explanation of the spot on the bottom does make sense. I have absolutely no knowledge of cast iron, but I was told it was a spruce?

A "sprue" mark. The long, linear ones seen on many older pieces are "gate" marks.

Hey Doug,

The comment about Larry's pan caused me to look more closely at my Raised 8. I have added 2 more detailed pics to the "after seasoning" post provided a couple months ago.

Is the round thing in the middle of the pan a "sprue" and is my pan a recast?
