Fleur de Lis waffle iron

While at an antique store 1000 miles from home, I found this waffle iron I thought was unique for around $25 & of course HAD to have it! I probably will never know who made it, (although if someone knows that would be great)but I'm curious as to the age of it. I won't be able to clean it until I get home, it does have a 10 on the outside but it doesn't have an extended handle, just a small metal notch on both sides. Does anyone know if there was originally a longer handle with it?

The low base and style would tend to indicate ca. mid-1800s. If there was a form of handle, it probably would have been a wire bail type affair that attached to the hinge and a prong (if there is one) on one of the paddles.
