Is there any reason not to use a self-cleaning oven to burn old residue off of cast iron ?

You can warp your cast iron since self cleaning ovens clean/heat at different temperatures.

Older, thinner vintage (and more valuable) pans are more at risk, and the SCO should be avoided altogether on them.

also... a pretty good chance of damaging your oven (when things fail its usually when they are pushed to an extreme... there are stories of ovens locking the doors for the self clean cycle and not ever unlocking them)... also, most ovens recommend that you remove the racks to avoid damage and discoloration... if there are no racks where are you going to put the pans?

I pay $5 for a pound of lye at Ace hardware. You're right, your stove will go out fast enough from seasoning.

HAHA!! I like a lot of lye as it saves on the elbow grease. Also over time you will need to add more water ( that is free here) and lye.

I want the crust and any paint to just slide off in less time as possible.

$20.00 in lye will last a LONG time. $20.00 in electric bill will not get you far. The less $ spent cleaning the more I spend purchasing, works for me.

I do not like to Self Clean a Oven.
Seems like they always have a problem after cleaning.
Lots of articles on why never to Self Clean a Oven just before Thanksgiving.

I have a local guy for Lye so I save the shipping cost and his prices are very good.
