Re: Lead in Cast Iron

The reason for a lead test is the off-chance that someone used a piece of CI to melt lead for casting into bullets or sinkers or whatever, and that left a lead residue. Maybe someone else knows...

Re: Tiny Spider Skillet

I shared your pics with the owner of the skillet in question and he thinks you nailed it with the Virginia Metalcrafters ID.

I'm passing along his thanks as well as repeating mine. Have a good...

Re: Tiny Spider Skillet

Thank you, I think your ID of the makers mark might be right.

May I have your permission to repost your pics?

Tiny Spider Skillet

Hello everybody -

Once again I'm trying to help an acquaintance with an ID and have come up short, would appreciate the input from Doug and the community here.

This is a tiny spider skillet,...

Re: Camp Skillet ID

I have a BSR spider skillet and yours has a number of differences; yours is not BSR.

If I were you I'd go with Doug's answer.

Re: A Little Pickiní Today.

That #8 griddle looks BSR, it's nearly identical to mine.

Re: Hammered Chrome Lodge - Cleaning?

Wow, that's nice.

By my understanding, plated pieces where the plating has worn through in places are worth about the same as similar unplated pieces.

But pieces where the plating is still...

Re: ID Help - Popover Pan

I see what you mean. Would that lead you to believe it is some sort of no-name copy or import?

ID Help - Popover Pan

Hello - I'm trying to help a friend again and would like confirmation or correction on my ID; I'm not strong on these.

Is this an unmarked Wagner popover pan made using a Griswold pattern?

It...

Re: Braised Short Ribs

I realize I'm replying to a post from last February, but the quoted link to a thread from 2016, that 2016 thread was my thread.

Yes, though I got away with using the wine that time, in general I...

Re: Skillet Identification

Both of your #7s and your first #5, the one with the A N, appear to be from prior to the switch to DISA automation, which happened in '66 - '68. I can't tell from the ears if they're pre-'50s but I...

Re: Skillet Identification

As of this writing, you've only linked pics of two skillets.

You're right on the #6.

The first #7 does look BSR prior to the mid-'60s but hard to say more than that. There's posting guidelines...

Re: Today's Finds

Without Griswold markings that would be my best guess but only because of the info Doug provided previously; he would know better than I.

Here's the one from my friend that I posted before, if you...

Re: Preheat Cast Iron for Baking Pizza at Higher Temperatures?

At home I don't use CI for pizza, I preheat a pizza stone and use a wood paddle to drop the assembled pizza on it. Just did that tonight.

But when camping, I'll cook pizza in a spider skillet...

Re: Today's Finds

The other month I posted a popover pan just like that, trying to help a friend ID it. I was guessing Griswold but the answer I got from Doug was a Wagner using an old Griswold pattern.

Re: Aebleskiver Vs. Egg Poacher

Yes, agreed - I've seen modern egg poachers use shallow bowls to hold the eggs (I've never tried them, only ever poached in a regular saucepan) but it seems to me that trying to use CI for such a...

Aebleskiver Vs. Egg Poacher

Hi -

There's been a few times that I've run across what appears to be an aebleskiver pan but described as an egg poacher.

Is this a misnomer or did some manufacturer(s) actually market this...

Re: Cast Iron Goblet

Looks like a mortar to me. As in, mortar and pestle.

I believe the cast iron ones were more commonly used by apothecaries/pharmacists than cooks. But not exclusively.

Re: Eater's Complaints

Well, this thread's from past September so I guess the question has been settled, but in cases like this I like to eliminate subjectivity, if possible.

In one test, cook one egg in CI, another in...

Pratt and Wentworth Skillet

Hi guys, I know I haven't been around in a while, I cut down on my forum/computer time. But I still consider this place the best resource on vintage cast iron cookware out there and I refer people...
