Seasoning with fish oil?

While I was scrubbing the pan down after pulling it out of the lye, there was a VERY distinct and strong smell of fish. I'm not sure if it may have been seasoned with fish oil or fish fats. I've never heard of anyone doing this (always pork fat or various plant based oils, or Crisco).

I think the more likely explanation is that pan was someone's go-to for pan frying fish in a past life.

Once my pans get a good seasoning going on them, when I clean them after cooking fish I give them a final swish with Dawn and that takes care of the fish odor.

That's a good idea! I'm just wondering how long that fish smell was trapped under the seasoning layers
