Max temp for cast iron, self cleaning oven...

So I kinda messed up but learned so it's not a total loss. I had a nasty piece I'd de-rustified but it was still covered some places with baked on gunk. Into the oven, self cleaningng cycle, and voila, gunk gone, seasoning gone, and it was covered in a light powder rust that scrubbed off easily. Reseason and go. 🙂

Now the question.

While what I did worked, I wonder if it was safe. Dunno how hot a self cleaning cycle gets or whether it's the high temp or just the speed of temp change that damages things.

Make me smarter please......or at least less ignorant lol!

You might warp some pieces using the self cleaning cycle in the oven.

I believe most here will recommend either a lye bath or electrolysis. I use electrolysis.

I personally never tried that, my oven doesnt even have that feature. I use Easy Off....in a bag. I dont think what you did will hurt it tho. Think about it. They cooked over open fires and in fireplaces long ago. Thats HOT id say. you should be ok.
