Regular skillets and lids sold as sets were not the norm. If hammered or hinged, then yes. Some multi-piece sets were offered which included a skillet, a dutch oven, and a lid that fit both, hence the dutch ovens with no pour spouts you sometimes see with lids having pour spout covers.
The pits you speak of are probably on BSR lids. Various designs were created for self-basting drippers, usually rings, ridges, or tips. BSR went the other way and used dimples-- they worked the same but with less iron than a smooth lid.
