Can anyone tell me anything about this piece? And also where I might find information on how to identify these things myself?

Looks like it might be a "p & b" Phillips & Buttorff made in Nashville Tn. The foundry database section on this site helps a lot with i.d. A google search has some info on them.
 
That is it, thanks.

I googled "P&B" and wasn't coming up with any answers but knowing what "P&B" stands for made the difference.
