Default Stripping Brass Plate from Cast Iron.

My intention is ruin a plated decorative trivet. I doubt it has any value but It's cast iron and the top surface is brass plated...in very poor condition. It fits one of my DUs perfectly and I want to use it for cooking. Internet rumor has it that lye will strip the brass off the iron. True or myth?
