Default Alaskan Cool Handle/Griswold #9

Most Griswold WI's that I have found have different handles than the one I found this past weekend at the swap meet. While cleaning it I noticed that the wire exits a small hole on top of the base where the handle connects to the paddles. Was just wondering if this was common practice or has someone decided to alter the connection method for the coiled handles?
Thanks in advance.

Hard to say, but I do remember thinking when you posted the group shot that the handles were odd.
