Miniatures by Virginia Metalcrafters

I have a couple of pieces of cast iron described on the boxes as "Miniature Reproduction of Early American Cooking Utensil" by Virginia Metalcrafters, Waynesboro, Virginia, possibly from the 1920s-1930s. They are also called ash trays. i'm guessing that they are spray-painted black as opposed to seasoned. Anyone have any ideas? Since I like to use my cast iron, I would want to clean off the paint if that's what's on there. ebay now has a few if you search "virginia metalcrafters cast iron miniature". Thanks.

A quick search reveals they could have been made any time between 1938 and 2005. Lye may or may not remove the paint; electrolysis should. Their size, however, makes them impractical for any use other than that for which they were made, which was as smoking accessories and/or advertising give-aways.
