#4 mystery

I bought this skillet thinking it was a Lodge. It was pretty crusty but I could see the single notch even with all the crud. After a few days in the lye I was surprised to find that it doesn't have a number on the bottom of the pan and it is also a rough casting in some places. Is this a Southern Mystery Skillet?

Dave is right. Single notch Lodge. PM me if that is going into your store. I don't have the #4

Are you sure Jack? It's a nice pan but this doesn't say early Lodge to me for some reason. It doesn't seem to be as fine a casting as my other early Lodges,
Look how sloppy it is around the heat ring. I am thinking it might have been recast. That stuff around the heat ring is not crud it's iron.

I'm going to post some better pictures in the sunlight today. There are some spots on it that are smooth polished iron so maybe it's just really old and damaged. I haven't seasoned it, this is just how it looks after soaking in the lye, scrubbing and drying.

Here is a picture in the sun. This pan looks like a recast to me.

Here is a picture of what I expected to see when I cleaned it. Early Lodge is pretty. I think this is the skillet the mold was made from.

You may very well be right Bonnie. It could be a recast. I dug out some of my single notch pans, only one of which has the arch logo, and they are consistently near perfect castings.

Thats an interesting pan Bonnie. It has the shape of an early Lodge. I agree it is a bit rough to be a true Lodge. Im also not sure that Lodge ever made a raised #4. I didnt think they made any raised smaller than a 5, and those are rarely seen.
