Just Why?

I had a lady ask me to restore five skillets. Sure I told her. Nothing special until I seen this. All were really cruddy with carbon and other assorted junk. This was Just a three notch lodge. I'm not sure if at the beginning of the shift they were trying out letter and number marks or just messing around. Thought it was unique,

Lots of marks. Some not so bold but they are there.

Pointless marks in patterns would probably not have been tolerated. Either quality control to identify which pattern made what pans, or perhaps shift identifiers. Since some are more faint than others and they don't appear to overlap, it's possible previous marks were filled in and new ones added in a fresh spot. Erosion of the fill material would account for the faint characters if that were the case. Also possible would be some kind subtle "commemoration" of a special occurrence at the plant.
