Griswold #8 DO Button Lid Coating

I recently picked up a griswold #8 DO with the button lid. The inside of thd lid has the black ceramic coating. First question, did all button lids have the coating? Next, the ceramic is wore off the ridges of the drip rings and its rusty. I was going to keep the coating, but since it is damaged, I'm thinking of removing it. The alternative is to use electrolysis on the top of the lid and just a brillow pad on the ridges, but then it would be tough to season just the ridges. I have removed the coating before with self basting lids but they had come both coated and uncoated. I see no advantage to the coating. Any opinion either way?
