Will be interesting to see how it looks after cleanup. I have had skillets that looked beyond help that cleaned up really good. Then others that had major pitting!! To me the surprise after cleaning is the fun part!!
At a quick glance I guess it was the heat ring on the outside of the bottom surface. I normally can recognize a Vollrath by the top of the handle because of that weird bend. It must be a fairly large skillet to warrant the assist tab? The shape of that tab has me thinking maybe Erie or Griswold. I know my Wagner assist was different. What is it DougD?
