Need Iron?

Starting bid averages out to over $60/skillet. Roughly 2/3 of them are either #3,5,6 or 8. Only 12 of the entire lot are "Erie", there are no spiders, no griddles and no DO's. Seller must not actually want to sell them.

I did some digging, made some phone calls, and was lucky enough to get a one-time, one-day-only opportunity to pick through this collection. As I kind of expected, many of the skillets were in rough shape-Very rusty, covered in too much crud to see possible cracks, and many with obvious cracks. He had a pretty good idea of the going price for clean pieces, and was holding pretty firm on asking about half that price, regardless of condition. That's a big gamble to take on pieces that you couldn't be sure of. He said he had a pretty good offer on the whole lot and was reluctant to part out too much of it before letting that person see them all first. I was going to take a #14 LBL for $200, but just couldn't gamble with the amount of crud on it. It was the best of the 4 I looked at. He had 2 other rooms with cast iron other than Griswold, and said he could make me better deals with those. probably 800 pieces. Also in rough shape. Lots of Wagner and Gate marked stuff, but some Wapak, Favorite Ware, Puritan, plus others. To make a LONG story short, I ended up with 41 pieces- non very high end, but some very unusual. Here's what I got:

Sorry for the long post, but I just had to share with people that I knew could appreciate the opportunity I had. Wish I could have done better- I'm sure many of you on here would have- but I'm pretty pleased with the pieces I got for the price I paid.

You've purchased in one day what would take most of us a lifetime to acquire. I suspect it will take you several weeks/months to get all those babies cleaned.
Great purchase......

Thanks Bonnie and MD, I currently have one e-tank set up that lets me clean 1 skillet at a time. I'm going to set up a second tank one night this coming week.

Jody M,
Great score!

Occasionally I come across those really good deals on multiple pieces and I usually get sucked in. Then it becomes "be careful what you ask for, you just might get it". I am embarrassed to admit how many pieces I have waiting their turn to be cleaned. There are at least 10 pieces in the lye tank and I am definitely considering a second, or third, etank.

"It's been a long time since I could say that I was not addicted" or something like that. I can't remember who the singer was but I understand what he was saying.

Hey, keep on having fun. We are going to be dead for a very long time:)

Happy hunting

Jack

I couldn't agree more Jack. Not thinking about retiring for at least 9 years, but thought I should starting building up some work for when I do.:chuckle:

Well, I just finished setting up a second tank. I can get 2 in the first tank with a jumper wire connecting them, but the second skillet doesn't clean as well. I cleaned the "script" Sidney last night, I think it might be my personal favorite of the bunch. Waiting to season it with the next group. In the tank currently is the #10 Griswold LBL w/ HR, #3 fully marked Chicago HDWE FDRY CO., and the #9 VICTOR. This is going to take some work, but I think it's going to be fun. Some of these pans have a lot of crud and some rust, so I'm hoping to not find too many "bad" surprises.
