Damper Finish

Posted a pic of the dampers I picked up last week and was just wondering if they had a finish type of coating when they were new? Was thinking about just seasoning them to preserve them from further rusting. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Old Griswold catalogs and bulletins don't really say. Some models came with "iron japanned" spindles instead of nickeled steel or wood handles. One might assume the dampers were japanned as well.

All the ones that have passed my hands have been bare cast iron, and the spindles nickeled steel.

As far as preserving them I am going with mineral oil with light heat. For myself I like the gray look and not the dark seasoning look. Also a concern is the spring on the spindle under high heat.
