Wagner Ware skillet

Saw a cast iron skillet in local antique store.
Has the inscription "Wagner Ware" at 12 o'clock,
The number "1058" down at the handle end.
Smooth bottom,,flat no warp. Clean pan.

Any idea of the age of this ? Asking $40 for it, good ?

Hard to give a good date without pictures. You didn't specifically mention it, but I'm guessing it also had a Sidney -O- to go with the stylized logo and no Made in USA markings. If so that would put it somewhere in the 1935-1959 range. See:

Assuming the condition is excellent, $40 isn't exactly a terrible price, but a cursory glance at sold ebay listings puts the value closer to $20. But then you gotta pay shipping.

yes it had the "Sidney -O-" mark and no "Made In The USA" mark.
Need some cleaning but the inside bottom is very smooth.

Wagner started using catalog numbers in 1924. Smooth bottom Wagners date from ~ 1930 on. The ones with the bolder, deeper incised marking are toward the earlier end of the range. The ones with finer lined markings and c/ns that look "stamped" are the later of the stylized logo, Sidney -O- skillets.

Thanks for the info,,will go back and get this before somebody else does. It is the right size for my stove and will go with my #5 Lodge 3-notch skillet.

personally I'd try to negotiate on the price a little bit $40 isn't necessarily a bad price but it's not really a good price either, especially given that you have to spend the time and effort to clean it up

Actually the skillet was in very good condition,,very clean. No rust, no crusty buildup anywhere. A quick wipe down, and a thin swipe of oil over the pan. Will be cooking with it tonight so I will find out just how good it was seasoned.
