My Newest and Hopefully Non-fake Griswold

I was again leaving a house 'o curios when, at the last second, I saw this tiny pan with what looked like maybe a cross under the severe rust.

I just used EZ Off and a vinegar bath, then finally (don't taze me) a powered wire brush. It says Griswold, sure enough, but I'm sure to acquire a fake sooner or later.

Opinion?

I will use it to fry hummingbird eggs (one at a time to avoid crowding.)

It has a coppery appearance on the bottom and I suspect it was painted with a copper colored paint. Don't know ....

Note the little cover with the holes. Is that for decoration?

Nooooooooooooooooooo!

Oh well, at least I didn't pay anything for it, LOL. I may just return it to the lady who gave it to me so she can sell it to someone else. It definitely looks better now.

Thanks.

If it is a fake and you didn't pay anything for it, then maybe you can place it where it belongs. Just a thought.

I say keep it. It was free, and it's no worse than a new Lodge #0. It's fun to fry an egg on a skillet that size. The egg fits on an English Muffin perfectly. Toss on a slice of cheese and a slab of ham and you're good to go.

I'd trash it. Keeping a known fake in circulation will just let another unsuspecting, uneducated collector spend money on a worthless piece of junk somewhere down the road.

I finally figured out what this thing really is. It's a 100% authentic Chinese ash tray, in good condition, thanks to my efforts. Seriously, I think that's what it has to be. That's what the little grill is for ... to cover the ashes and unsightly butts.

I'll take it back to the lady and tell her what it is. She can have it back if she promises to tell customers it's just an ash tray.

I saw one just like it at a flea market today. It was in a display case and they were asking $65 for it.

I saw stacks of these in an antique store once. They were $2 ea and of varying quality. I think they were high school casting projects made from an original.

Possible, if aluminum; unlikely if iron. The fakes were sold from ads in Antique Trader magazine back in the 80s for something like 3 for $20.

I returned it to the lady today and told her it was an ashtray, which it undoubtedly was meant to be. She said "no problem" but sounded annoyed, even though I cleaned it up for her. Oh well....
