Thrifty Iron

My wife got friendly with the ladies at the local thrift shop. She usually goes there to look at the jewelry but she keeps an eye open for any cast iron. When she went in today, she told the woman she was interested in the cast iron that had no price on it. It had been sitting in the back room for a long time. Since my wife got backstage access, she was able to spot them. The woman said, “Cast iron is very expensive… I don’t know what we would charge for that. How about… 5 dollars each”? My wife said that was fine and came back with them. Haha! I was shocked. They’re in the lye tank now. Sometimes you just get lucky. By the way, do you guys think the “Favorite” is a chicken fryer? Pretty deep pan.

Looks like a Chicken Fryer to me. Kinda looks like it has an assist handle, but then again, it doesnt. Id still say chicken fryer.

Yes, a chicken fryer. They are also seen both unmarked and marked with the CHF Favorite TM. Lids are also marked 8½, but apparently size 9 lids fit as well.

Apparently, manufacturers had a hard time deciding whether to make chicken fryers with the same sidewall taper as their regular skillets, resulting in a larger top diameter; or to instead compensate and narrow the taper so that lids fit both regular skillets and chicken fryers with the same size number.

there seem to be two different pans in the pics. one a smiley 8 1/2 chicken fryer and the middle pic is a later wagner with made in usa on it.

Yes, they’re two different pans, one Wagner and one Favorite. I’m kind of bummed out that I’ll have to locate a lid for it haha. But, at 5 dollars, I think it’s a good deal. Why in the heck would it need a lid if you’re frying chicken? Unless they put the lid on afterwards to keep dust out of the oil. Or… they were using it as a small Dutch oven. Could probably make a nice chicken and rice dish in it from stove to oven.

Measure the skillet and go to GW, if you just want to cover it for cooking. I have found a lot of lids there for dirt cheap.

I’ve since cleaned them up and already put them to work.
