Unmarked Gem Pan....

Dropped in to GW this afternoon and found this unmarked Gem pan. Full disclosure ... I know nothing about these.... read the webpage on this site related to same...but, could not locate any with this pans characteristics. The visuals provide two "hash marks" on the handle surfaces ("11" (I suspect not the number 11), and, what appears to be gate marks on the underside (see photos). I'm guessing identification (if like the skillets) is unlikely... but, worth a shot. Appears to be reasonably good casting...with clean execution of the rim and handles. Any insights are appreciated, could not locate on the net. Looking forward to cooking with this... I gave $8.00.

An N.E.S. (New England Style) roll pan. Typically numbered 11 by most who made one. Gem pans were too widely copied to narrow down a maker on all but a very few of the unmarked ones.

Thanks Doug.. after I posted I tracked two identical to this one(ETSY and Pinterest) and they were both identified as N.E.S. (as you verified). Both listings indicate unknown maker is commonplace. I appreciate your expertise. Am pleased to own this "survivor".... very cool , affordable piece of vintage history. I enjoy the hunt and the learning process. Thanks again. I will use it.

For the sake of completion....

High on the "way cool" factor. First run blueberry muffins. Sprayed with olive oil, filled to 2/3, baked at 400 degrees for (16 min.). Delicious. Easy clean up. Will move on to rolls next ! Smile worthy when you think how many years this piece has been in/out of ovens.

Thanks Sean... I buy them to use them. Funny thing..I was reading on another
cast iron forum that these are ubiquitous in the Northeast...apparently stacked
deep at numerous sources, and, can be had for $10-20.00 . Does not appear to
be the case out here in the desert southwest... or, at least in my experience. Still,
glad I found this one.

Hi Charles,

I have a couple of those and I really like them, a bit of a PITA to clean an season with all the corners, but well worth the effort. I bought mine mainly to make cornbread in, and it turns out great! :glutton:
