What type of wood on the waffle iron?

I've got an early Wagner waffle iron with broken wood handles. It's one of the "The Wagner" waffle irons, patd July 26, 1892.
Can anyone tell me what type of wood was used for the handles?

Unless a specific reference to wood type can be found in an old catalog, one can only guess that whatever hardwood was plentifully available in the manufacturer's area would have likely been used. Hickory was often the choice for durable wood tool handles.
