Re: Brass Drain Valve on E-tank

Probably not as long as it's not part of the circuit or is not grounded. Bigger question is if it will be practical given the amount of sludge and gunk that accumulates in the bottom of an e-tank.

Re: What Is This?

A medieval torture device? Looks old, but not super old. My guess would be some kind of wafer iron, but not in the sense of ice cream cone wafer.

On second thought, cast handles wouldn't be...

Re: First Cast Aluminum Cleaning - Waffle Iron

I'd say, as with aluminum cookware, you just use them. Cooking spray or brushed with butter/oil. Letting a patina build up (or not) is up to individual choice.

Re: First Cast Aluminum Cleaning - Waffle Iron

The bad part is that where the apparent scraping was done is not where the paddles would have been polished. Typically, just the outer rims, the handle attachments and the tops of the rings would be...

Re: Help in Identification

No Wagner lid I'm aware of with rings other than zig-zag or scalloped. I did come across a lid once with dimples for drippers shaped like the Wagner "turtle top" that had a patent date also seen used...

Re: Griswold Slant 'Erie' Vs EPU

Since we see slant EPU skillets with slant Erie ghosts, they should be the same, but perhaps not in all cases. Handle design variations among Griswold skillets tell us not all of a certain size were...

Re: Unmarked Wagner Deep Skillet W/ Skillet Cover

Although not shown, the assumption would be that the unmarked deep skillet set at the bottom of page 28 has a cover with the zig-zag drip rings from the 1920s. See photo at top right of pg. 32. If...

Re: Skillet ID May Be Tough?!

The marking is consistent with CHF unmarked "number in diamond" pieces, but being indistinct as it is, it may be another, unknown foundry's copy using a CHF as a pattern.

See:...

Re: Unique Skillets

Hard for any known maker's skillets to actually be unique, as hundreds if not thousands were made using the same patterns over and over. There are a few Erie patterns with numbers off-center, the #9...

Re: Identity Crisis

I am assuming all three photos are of the same pan. If the markings being described are on a pan not shown, I would say it's better to show and talk about one pan at a time.

Re: Identity Crisis

The markings described are not discernable in the photo. There appear to be no notches in the heat ring. A later Lodge 3-notch might say 8 (at 12 o'clock) and SK below it, but incised not raised, and...

Re: Identity Crisis

But not a Lodge that would have any of those markings on the bottom.

Re: Newbie Seasoning Question

I'm still to this day amazed that a blog post by someone who had only ever seasoned one piece of cookware before has in some circles come to be touted as the be-all to end-all of cast iron seasoning....

Re: The Strange Case of 2 1/2 Dutch Ovens

Recognizing Wagner's finger grip assist handle, bail attachment shape, the hammering style, and the 8 on the bottom.

In all my years of restoring and seasoning hundreds of pans and talking about it with hundreds of others who also do, I've never had a pan that suffered from, nor encountered a single person who...

Let's bear in mind this thread is nearly two years old and was the last time the OP visited. Please take into consideration when viewing old dormant threads.

Re: Favorite?

Favorite #3s are the odd bird in the line. Try a Google image or eBay search for them and you'll see the difference. Although your 5,7,8 Favorites have long, distinct handle ridges, the Vollraths are...

Re: Favorite?

I'm not aware of any Favorite #3 skillets that have other than a wide fully-rolled edge for a heat ring or that have an elongated distinct handle reinforcement rib, although there are a few that...

Re: Favorite?

Although the expectation is that an unmarked Vollrath would have a sideways-oriented size number on the bottom, the consensus is that these are Vollrath.

Just a reminder. There's no harm in experimenting with aggressive measures on pans already ruined by fire damage. But anything which even subtly alters the original surface texture, either as-cast or...
