Can someone explain how the two half's stay together other than the weight of them? Everything "fits nice" and stays "opened" in the opened positon but nothing is holding them together when...

The only thing we know for sure is that it's 1960 or earlier? (No "Made in U.S.A." on bottom) correct?
Does the strange #8 ( loops not completed) but more like a large "S" when magnified tell us...
