Re: How to Season Fine Details?

I find the area where the bail attaches to the side handles on DOs to be a pain to season. I've found using a silicone basting brush works very well. Before you wipe off all of the oil you are...

Re: Warped Pan Solutions?

Yeah I have a couple of skillets that are spinners on dead flat surfaces, but don't move at all - not even a wobble - on my gas stove. Great users, so I just don't worry about the warp. If I use...

Re: Looking for More Info About a Wagner Pie Logo Skillet

I'm certainly not an expert, but I've put nickel and chrome pieces in my lye bath and it doesn't touch the finish, just gets the crud off as desired. Re-seasoning them takes a bit more attention to...

Newbie Seasoning Question

Why do most seasoning regimens advise to leave the pans in the oven to cool, and many go so far as to caution against even opening the oven door for a couple of hours? I guess I can see that it's...

Re: Evaporust

Good point! So far so good this morning. Did the same seasoning regimen described upthread and they've all were in at 400F for an hour, no smoke at all. Whatever it was, burned off yesterday. I...

Re: Evaporust

Don't think there could be mineral oil, unless the person who gave me the MCT oil inadvertently gave me mineral oil.

I thought about other pieces smoking too, but upon opening the oven when my...

Re: Evaporust

Yeah, I wasn't intending to use it for seasoning, just short term rust prevention. Then when I saw that it was usable for seasoning, I just left it on out of expediency. I suspect that my oven may...

Re: Evaporust

Well, I had a go at seasoning the DO in question today. I also had a couple of Erie skillets in the same seasoning batch that I had also used Evaporust on, although they didn't smell of it.

Re: Evaporust

So I called their customer service line - they picked up immediately and were extremely friendly and helpful. Basically they think I'm smelling the migration of iron into the solution as the...

Evaporust

I've used this on a few pieces to good effect. Works quickly and I already had a gallon sitting around from my espresso machine restoration projects. Here's the weird thing: I'm working on a...

Dremel for Cleaning Stubborn Crud

I know (powered) wire brushing is a terrible idea on vintage CI, with the distinct possibility of damaging the finish. I have discovered there is a power-assisted way to get of stubborn carbon...

Re: Is This As Good As It Will Get? :)

After using Easy Off on a couple of skillets and a dutch oven, I set up a lye bath and have not looked back. It's much more effective and considerably easier to manage than garbage bags of oven...

Trivets, in Practical Terms

Does anyone use the trivet in their dutch ovens regularly? I am thinking the idea is similar to a roasting rack, to keep a large hunk o' meat off of direct contact with the bottom. Other than that,...

Re: Griswold Trivet Duo-chrome

I have a #8 Griswold trivet that is plated iron, probably nickel. It's worn off on some areas on both sides, so I just seasoned those exposed areas to prevent rust.

Re: Cracks

Ah right, this is a 5th series (inset heat ring). I think this crack was there and either I missed it or it became slightly expanded during cooking and hence more obvious.

Cracks

Recently picked up a 4th series #8 Erie skillet, and after getting it out of the lye bath, it looked good. Cooked in it last night and while cleaning it, noticed a crack that goes through both...

Re: Cleaning Up a Broken Edge

Good call on the Dremel for detail work. To Russell's point, I found that it went fast on the bench grinder so I wasn't able to do much beyond getting the sharpness off. Dremel should be great to...

Re: Cleaning Up a Broken Edge

That was my thought too - main risks probably inadvertent grinding of other surfaces or dropping the piece. OK, bench grinder it is!

Cleaning Up a Broken Edge

I recently got a Griswold #6 Dutch Oven, and the tab in front (at 6 o'clock position) is broken off. Otherwise it's in great shape - flat, no pitting. This will be a user for me so I would like to...

Re: Rust!

So far I've followed the seasoning guidelines from the main page here.

When I checked the piece today, the seasoning was sticky. I figured I must have taken it out of the oven before it had...

Re: Rust!

This is occurring with a Griswold DO that I'm trying to season, as well. I washed it 3 or 4 times (in cold water) after cleaning with lye, quickly dried off with a clean rag, popped it into a 200...
