What does a "10 inch" pan mean?

Hey guys and gals. I got a new cook book for Christmas and an apple coffee cake I made called for a 10 inch cast iron skillet. I went with an 8 but my wife and I had a discussion about what it meant. She thought it meant 10 inches of cooking surface, which is about what my #10 three notch is, but I measured from sidewall to sidewall and my 8 Sydney O was approximately 10 inches.
Thoughts,

I would have gone with a #8 as well. How did it turn out?

It turned out great. It rose almost to past the top. The discussion started when it was rising in the oven. The recipe also had a great frosting/glaze and said to serve in the skillet. We needed to remove it from the skillet because there was not enough room to let the frosting settle. The 8 was the right call. Thanks for the responses.
