"Oval" DO

Cleaning this for a friend. These pics are after a little time in the lye spa. Will be in there another day or so and then electro. Think there will be some rust pitting.

Two gate marks on the bottom, but no logo revealed so far. On the inside ridge are "No 5" on one end and "Pat Apl" on the other. Unfortunately, no lid.

Anyone know who manufactured this and when?

As always, thanks.

The first US patent was awarded in 1790. They were not assigned numbers by the patent office until 46 years and about 10,000 patents later. The gate marks suggest more like mid to late 1800s. Maker unknown (as is the case with most bottom gated, unmarked pieces). If an identical piece turned up with both a patent number and perhaps some markings, then we would know.

Things with legs were made to go over a fire, so one would expect such implements to have long handles or bails. In this case, it would be nubs just to sit level without rocking on the gate mark(s).
