Help with This Skillet Please

I am a little confused with this skillet. It has a completely smooth bottom with no distinguishing marks whatsoever. However it seems to have the triangular reinforcement pad with the letter ‘D’ underneath. It also has the number 8 incised on the top of the handle. I read the section again on discerning unmarked pieces but maybe I am missing something. Any help?

Typically IDed as early unmarked Wagner. Or a competent copy made using Wagner as a pattern. More likely the former.

Could you tell me approximately when Wagner made these pieces? I see some that are called ‘unmarked’ but still have the size incised on the bottom and I know when those were made. But this one I have no idea.

"Unmarked" refers to the lack of a manufacturer's TM, not an absence of all markings. Wagner outside heat ring skillets were pre-1935. My assumption would be this one falls between 1924 and 1935, as 1924 is when they began putting c/ns on the bottom and moved size numbers to the handle.

Thank you. I do know that unmarked is exactly how you defined it. It’s my fault I did not make myself very clear. I was simply saying I have never seen a piece of unmarked Wagner that was completely smooth and with no numbers or letters of any kind in the bottom.

You also mentioned an outside heat ring. There is no heat ring at all on the bottom of this skillet. Were you thinking that there was?

The light reflecting from the bottom circumference in the photos makes it appear to have a HR. There are smooth bottom unmarked Wagner which appear to pre-date the descriptive marks like "6-1/2 INCH SKILLET".

Yes the photo could have been better. I do see that. With all the new information do you have a date in mind when this piece was manufactured? How much earlier would it predate the ones marked with the size as you mentioned?

Post-1935 for a #8 smooth bottom Wagner. How long before descriptive markings were used is uncertain.
