Hello from Wisconsin.
I have been reading and absorbing the info here for a quite a while.
I have always admired cooking on cast iron, and I do a lot of picking at sales and fleas. I use lye and electrolysis to clean. The rusty cheapys are my faves, and I think its great to save them from the scrap pile. I have a number of pieces I use regularly. And the dutch oven is used a lot also. I posted in the the beginner forum earlier, and hope I didnt overstep any rules. I dont want to get in trouble. Ha!
