Confusion.

My guess would be, assuming the hole in the eBay lid is original, that it is not for a vent as on RB pg. 51, but rather for a missing temperature gauge.
 
I have not seen one with a temperature guage. Is it in one of the books?

I blew up the pics on the link and think they were real.. Did they appear to be an original part of the pan to you too?

Shown in a 1938-39 Sears catalog, p.731, is a "New" hammered, Wagner made (judging from the photos) "Dutch Oven with Easy to Read Heat Indicator, $1.45"

It's possible that Wagner only made these for Sears and not with their regular store line of cookware.
