Help Identify This 2 Piece Item??

Hi, I'm trying to help a friend identify this piece. I don't know if it cookware or not. She's had it about 40 years. The round base is about 6" in diameter, or so. The handle part with the cutouts lifts up, leaving the rounded base. There are no markings on it.

Cast iron vessels with vented or perforated lids were used on stoves as humidifiers.
