Wagner Wafer Iron

Okay, so I picked this up today for $16. I looked it up in the blue book and the catalog number should be 1451 instead of 1450. It has a drain hole like the earlier model as described in the book (1451). It also looks like the handles are from a waffle maker. Is it possible this is an in between model and that's why the catalog numbers are different?

Also, looking at it I'm pretty sure someone painted it black, but I took a risk on it because it was $16. Does anyone have any advice for removing paint from CI?

Edit - I just looked in the bb in the back of the Wagner section and saw that a 1450 is described as having wood handles, so they might be original.

The handles appear to be original. Lye will often take paint off; you just have to suspend the paddles with the handles unsubmerged or use a container that you can fit the paddles in and then fill with lye solution only as high as necessary. The base may have been japanned, so you might opt to leave it as-is.
