Elation Turns to Disappointment

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to find a pile of old cast iron stashed away in an unlit basement backroom of an old house having a sale. They were unsure about letting anyone go into the room to look around, choosing instead to drag a few items out at a time to sale. They eventually let a few people in and I stumbled on this pile (along with several taiwan and korean pieces). It was extremely dark and many of the pieces had lots of crud, so I did the best I could with the flashlight APP on my phone. Iwas able to make a deal on these 18 pieces. when I got home, I have to admit, I was surprised by a few of the pieces. Most notably, two #10 ERIE Deep Skillets - p/n 734. I didn't recognize that they were deep in the basement (I know, sounds impossible), just focused on the bottoms. I believe that these are very hard to find pieces. I threw the nicest one in the etank yesterday and just took it out a couple of hours ago. Disappointment - a crack I didn't see. Oh well, win some, lose some. The other 734 just went in the tank. I can see that it has some obvious sulphur pitting, but not too bad since I can still read the p/n. Lots of other good pieces here too. Hammered CHF Chicken Pan without a lid, #8 BSR skillet with lid (not sure if match), Arc logo Lodge #3, 3 notch Lodge chicken pan with lid, some other BSR and Lodge, and 4 crud covered mystery skillets. Still extremely excited about this purchase.

Wow looks like you made a good score. I'm still a beginner at making a ID, but on the row of little ones the second one from the top looks like a iron mountain. I'll have to wait till later to see if I'm right.

I think I see the crack on the one #10... it doesn't appear to go all the way down... but that is a shame... those are two really nice pans... and other than the crack appear to be in really good condition.

Steven, it is indeed a #3 Iron Mountain. I actually have a few of them, so I don't buy them unless I can get them pretty cheap. D, Yeah, it's a shame about the cracked one. The others appear to have no cracks, but the row with 3 @5s and a #6 have so much crud on them that you can never tell what you might find when you clean them. Hoping for the best.

That is a nice bunch of iron Jody. I really like that CHF hammered chicken fryer. :icon_thumbsup:

Thanks Bonnie, I was very excited to find them. I was also lucky enough to get the whole pile at a very good price. Both ERIE #10 Deep Skillets are in the oven right now. I'm anxious to see if the one with the crack will be usable. The sulphur pitting on the other was not nearly as bad was I thought, can't wait to see what it looks like after seasoning.

We can't either!
