Buttered over?

When someone says “buttered over”, what are they referring to? I had someone tell me that a small 3 that I had looked like a CHF or Favorite that had been buttered over. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

It refers to the practice of filling in existing markings on a pattern, either to obscure them to create an unmarked piece or to "clean the slate" to add new markings to the pattern. If, in doing so, the fill material is applied in such a way that it becomes apparent in the castings made from that pattern, the effect is like that of something having been "spread" on the surface of the pan, like butter on bread.

OK, that makes more sense. Thank you for helping me understand that better. Are these pieces that are in "progress" of a change or have the marks not as clean/smooth as other pieces any more or less desirable/collectable?
