Which Would You Select?

I can get one of these two skillets. A #8 slant logo EPU with heat ring or a #7 "Erie" (think it is a 3rd series).

Here's the catch. The Erie has a crack that is visible from the inside and outside. Think it will fill in over time. Even so, if you can only get one of them.....

If using the skillet, the #8 definitely. I'm not sure how hard it is to find the #7 Erie. I don't buy to hang on a wall.

It wouldn't be a hard choice for me.

Easy choice for me, too, but I'm a user and not a collector. I would never buy anything with a crack in it even if I were a collector.

Yeah, I would never (knowingly) buy a cracked pan. If I wanted the SLEPU as a user, and it was at a user price, I might consider it.

I consider myself a user.

I try to rotate through my pieces, even the #8 BSR that is very badly rust pitted on the inside and out (it was free). The opinions so far are consistent with my thoughts after discovering the crack in the ERIE. Was really disappointed because it would have been a great addition to my #9 first series ERIE.

Should get a good deal because I'm cleaning a total of 4 skillets for the owner of an indoor shop at a flea market. The other 2 have "x inch skillet" on the bottom, so no interest in them.

Here is the #8 slant logo EPU with heat ring (#8 slepu). It has been striped, e-tanked and in the oven for the 15 minutes. Just wiped off before going back into the oven.

The cooking surface is pretty good. Too bad it has the sulfur pitting, but it's definitely a user for me.

Off course there has to be something else to address. Discovered a rainbow oil slick when washing it off before the e-tank. Had to wash it with dawn a few times to make sure it was clean.

Still a small amount of black rust wiping off after 15 minutes, but not too bad. Think it cleaned up pretty well and it only spent about 24 hours in the lye bath.

Doug, I apologize if this should be under Show and Tell.

Wally ,

That's a keeper... nice job ! I'm guessing you were referring to
the pitting on the bottom ? ... doesn't look too bad to me.
Well done.

This is about the cracked #7. Since you might need the history of the thread decided to keep it with this post.

It has been in the lye spa and etank (for 2 hours on each side). It has initial seasoning. My friend is going be selling this.

What do I need/can tell her besides it is cracked?

I can not figure out what the "shiny" stuff is. On the top side of he handle it appears the missing areas have been chipped. That is why I left it in the etank for so long. Yet, scrapped with a SS brush and scrubby, nothing came off! Can't get it to chip off or come off anywhere.

Did a lead test (after it was seasoned) on the handle. Negative.

Anyone have an idea what this shiny stuff is? any other "warnings she should let a potential buyer know"?
