Great find. Yes, they are high value items. Easiest way to tell if something is aluminum is a magnet (that won't stick). I'd say yours is (worn) nickel plated iron.
 
It probably won't affect the remaining nickel as you might anticipate. I'd just use vinegar and steel wool on the rust, then apply a minimal seasoning to inhibit rust reforming.

BTW, this turned out to be a very good day. For $35 I got the #1 Oval Roaster with trivet, a #9 Large block round griddle, a #10, 948 Erie Popover pan, a #3 small block grooved handle skillet, a #4 small block late handle skillet, a#5 Griswold Puritan skillet, a #6 large block smooth bottom skillet, and a #8 3 notch Lodge skillet. This was at an estate sale. I was securing all this when a guy took whatever the #7 skillet was. Oh well.....am certain I got the best of the deal.
